My dad always said to never use a tack cloth on raw wood before staining

He insisted the oils would mess with the finish, so for years I'd just blow the dust off with compressed air. Ngl, I finally tried it on a maple table last month and the stain went on way smoother with zero blotching. Anyone have a go-to brand for tack cloths that doesn't leave too much residue?

Man, that hits home. My grandpa was the same way, swore tack cloths were the devil's work on bare wood. I spent so much time sanding a cherry cabinet by hand, scared to touch it with anything but a brush. Finally caved and tried one on some scrap and... yeah, the difference was crazy. It's wild how those old rules get stuck in our heads.

Right, those old rules really do stick in your head forever.

Oh totally! My dad used to drill this thing about never washing a cast iron skillet with soap. I finally looked it up and realized modern soap is fine (the old stuff had lye). It's funny how those lessons get passed down without the context.
