My uncle told me in 2018 that remote work would just be a fad for tech people.

He was a manager at a big insurance firm in Chicago and said real work needed an office. He told me, 'Riley, you'll be back in a cubicle in two years, tops.' I took a remote job anyway. Fast forward to now, and my whole town has changed. Three new coffee shops opened just for people working on laptops, and my old office building got turned into apartments. My uncle's own company went hybrid last year. I think the push to get everyone back to desks is missing how much our towns and daily lives have already shifted to fit this new normal. Has anyone else seen their local area change in a big way because of this?

Yeah my cousin was the same way, kept saying we'd all get called back any minute. But the weirdest thing is the old mall near me. Half of it's empty but the other half got turned into these little office pods you can rent by the day, and there's a gym and a daycare now. It's like the whole place changed to suit people who don't have a regular office to go to anymore. Feels permanent.

That mall thing is spot on. The old Sears by us is now a self storage place and a weirdly fancy pickleball court. They kept the auto center sign up, but now it's just a row of lockers you can rent month to month. Whole area feels like it's slowly turning into a service hub for stuff you don't own.

Your uncle's old office building becoming apartments says it all.
