That's just... wild. You'd think a light switch would have one job to do and that's it. Sorry you had to deal with that, honestly sounds frustrating. Feels like everything these days needs a software update before it can do the basic thing it was made for. My toaster better not start asking for updates next...

Wait, does your toaster even have internet? I mean I get the frustration but most smart toasters don't actually need updates, they're just regular toasters with a fancy timer.

I've noticed this pattern everywhere now, with fridges that buzz at you when the milk's expired and washing machines that want a firmware patch before they'll spin. Your mileage may vary but in my experience, companies are slapping "smart" on basic appliances just to justify a higher price tag and collect data on how you use your toaster. Even my buddy's garage door opener has a mobile app now, and it glitches out every time the Wi-Fi blinks. Take this with a grain of salt, but I honestly think half these gadgets would work better if they just kept a simple button and forgot the internet part entirely.
