Compared hand-painted lures against store bought ones for pike fishing and it's not even close
I spent $60 on a single custom lure from a guy in Michigan and caught 14 fish in one afternoon. The $8 Rapala from Dick's got me zero that same day. The difference is the hand-painted ones have way more realistic scales and the paint actually holds up. If you're into lure painting as a hobby, skip the beginner kits and just buy one from a pro first to see what's possible. Has anyone else noticed the quality gap or is it just my local lake being weird?

Painted hundreds of lures myself over the years and the difference comes down to detail work. Hand painters will layer three or four different colors just to get that scale pattern right while factory lures use one quick stencil. That extra time shows in the water no question. My custom painted Pike Minnow gets strikes even on slow days when my store bought ones just sit there. Take this with a grain of salt but I bet its not your lake being weird.
