My mom called my air fryer a 'fancy toaster oven' and now I can't unsee it

We were talking about kitchen gadgets last weekend and she pointed out that my air fryer basically does the same thing as her 20 year old toaster oven but costs 4x as much and takes up twice the counter space. It hit different because she's been roasting veggies and reheating pizza the exact same way for decades without needing a dedicated gadget. Is there actually a difference between these two or did we all just fall for good marketing?

I saw some test once that said air fryers work better because the fan moves air faster than a regular toaster oven, but honestly my mom's toaster oven makes perfect crispy chickpeas so I'm not convinced the difference is worth the hype. The marketing thing is real though, they basically rebranded countertop convection ovens and everyone lost their minds.

I mean, in my experience the air fryer does get stuff crispier faster, but it's not like your mom is wrong either. Maybe we just needed something new to feel excited about in the kitchen.
