Wrote a letter to my dad after we fought over the family truck
I had to choose between moving 800 miles away for a job or staying to help him with his hardware store. I picked the job, and now he won't even cash the check I sent him last month. Has anyone else burned a bridge that you're still trying to rebuild?

Aw man, I gotta push back on this a little. Your dad is probably hurt because he sees you leaving as you choosing money over family, not just a job. Maybe send him a letter explaining why this opportunity means so much to you instead of just a check.

My own dad cried when I took a promotion that meant moving three states away. He didn't talk to me for like two months. Then I called him one night and accidentally made him laugh by telling him my neighbor's cat kept sneaking into my apartment and judging me for eating cereal for dinner. That broke the ice better than any letter I could've written. Sometimes a stupid joke about your own loneliness is the thing that reminds them you're still their kid, you know? Ever tried just making him laugh instead?

Gotta say, I think letters can work but they can also come off as too formal sometimes. That cat story is gold though. My dad and I didn't talk for a bit after I moved, and what broke it was just me rambling about how I couldn't figure out which way to hang the toilet paper in my new place. Little dumb stuff like that reminds them you're still the same goofy kid.
