The change in our work forum moderation after going fully remote

I miss when online work groups felt more like casual chats. Before, mods only stepped in for real fights or spam. Now, anything about management or policy gets flagged fast. Like a few months back, I posted a mild joke about meeting overload and got a warning. It makes me not want to share honest thoughts anymore. Maybe it's for the best, but it feels too controlled. Idk, just thinking out loud here.

Our remote policy actually spells out what not to post, including jokes about workloads. It felt over the top at first, but it cut down on a lot of vague complaining that was bringing the team down. Now we save the real venting for our direct messages.

My friend got a formal note from HR last week because she shared a meme in the team chat about Zoom fatigue. It was just a silly picture of a cat looking tired, but they said it 'could create a negative atmosphere.' She doesn't post anything fun there anymore, lol.

Hearing about that HR note really threw me off. A cat meme got a formal warning? That's insane. It's not like she posted something mean or rude. Now she's too scared to share anything fun, and that just makes the chat dead. HR needs to get a grip, it was just a harmless joke. Stuff like this is why people hate corporate rules.

Read an article last week about how companies kill morale by policing small jokes. There was this whole study from last year showing teams that share dumb memes actually report less stress. But HR sees a tired cat and acts like it's a protest sign. Same thing happened at my cousin's office with that "this meeting could have been an email" image. Someone got a talking-to for "undermining collaboration." Makes you wonder if these people have ever had a normal conversation.
