A five minute critique from a retired stagehand rewired my whole approach

I was building custom display cases for a museum in Portland, not really a weird job but it felt offbeat to me at the time. An old stagehand wandered by while I was routing some edge profiles and he just stopped and watched for a minute. Then he said 'you're fighting the wood grain instead of reading it, you need to flip your feed direction on every pass.' I thought I knew what I was doing, but after I tried it on the next piece of walnut the tearout basically vanished. It was such a small thing but it changed how I think about every cut I make now, I actually slow down and look at the grain before I start. Has anyone else had a random stranger drop a piece of advice that completely flipped your process?

Funny you mention fighting wood grain, I once had a guy tell me I was fighting my own handsaw and that's why I kept cutting crooked lines.

Maybe it was less about the saw and more about how hard you were gripping it. A buddy of mine used to death grip his tools and everything came out wavy until he loosened up. Sometimes the tool tells you what it wants to do if you just let it.

You gotta take that grain reading stuff with a grain of salt though. I've been routing for years and sometimes the 'right' direction just makes a bigger mess if your bit is dull or your speed is off. I once followed some old timer's advice about climbing cuts on a piece of curly maple and ended up with a blowout that ruined the whole panel. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, fighting the grain is sometimes the only way to get a clean edge on certain figured woods. Paying too much attention to the grain can actually make you overthink it and cause more mistakes than just committing to a consistent feed.
