Gave a 5 minute speech at a local open mic about why pineapple belongs on pizza and a guy in the back shouted 'you just ruined my childhood'
He was dead serious too, now I always scan the room for hecklers before I dive into any food debate, has anyone else had a random heckler totally derail their set?

Hold on, doesn't getting a reaction like that kinda mean your speech was working? I get that hecklers can throw you off, but that guy shouting out is proof you hit a nerve and got people engaged. Comedy and open mic stuff is all about stirring people up, not everyone is gonna quietly nod along. Honestly, that moment sounds way more memorable than if they just clapped politely. I'd say that's a win for getting a real reaction, even if it wasn't a nice one.

Took a heckler to finally get a reaction at my last open mic, which says a lot about my material, honestly. I had a guy yell "you're not funny" and I froze for a second, then just said "neither is your face" which got a bigger laugh than anything I actually wrote. It was a mess but people remembered it, so maybe there's something to that. My quiet, polite comedy sets usually get crickets and a single pity clap from the guy who runs the place. So sure, getting someone to shout out weird stuff might mean you're actually landing somewhere, even if it's a faceplant into a table.

Can't really get behind that take. Heckling is a sign the audience wants to take control away from you, not that they're engaged with your material. Having a guy yell something rude just means he's being a jerk, and getting a cheap comeback laugh is more about relief than actual comedy. Those quiet sets where nobody says anything are rough, but at least you're working on your craft instead of relying on someone to interrupt. Feels like giving hecklers credit for your show is a slippery slope toward becoming a roast comic instead of someone with actual jokes.
