My big phone rant bombed hard at last week's open mic

I got up on stage at The Rusty Nail last Thursday with this whole bit about how my phone screen cracked from a 6 inch drop onto carpet. I thought it was hilarious but the room went dead silent after the first punchline. Tried to save it with some improv about phone cases being scams but that made it worse. Has anyone else brought a piece about a personal tech fail and had it completely flop?

Pretty sure phone screens crack from the pressure point of the drop, not the height itself. Carpet just has a hard floor underneath it, so that six inch drop probably landed on concrete basically. Did you try asking the audience if any of them had a screen protector save their phone?

Did you guys see that test where some guy dropped phones from different heights onto different surfaces? Main point was that the impact force matters more than the distance. @sean_green44 is onto something with the pressure point thing, but also the angle of impact changes everything. A phone hitting exactly on the corner at the right angle can crack from a short drop onto a soft surface. Ask me how I know. My old phone took a two foot fall onto grass and the screen shattered because it landed right on the edge of the glass protector. The protector did its job splitting the force, but the phone still died.
