My next door neighbor said my garden was 'too messy' and it actually made me step back
So last Saturday I'm out back pulling weeds and this older guy named Frank from two doors down walks by with his dog. He stops and goes 'you know, letting stuff just grow wild like that attracts rats.' I was about to get defensive because I've been trying to do more native plants for the bees and all that. But then I actually looked at my yard compared to his. His grass is short, his beds are clean, no dead leaves anywhere. Meanwhile I've got a pile of branches in the corner and some overgrown mint taking over a whole section. I went inside and talked to my wife about it and she admitted she's been quietly annoyed by the chaos too. We ended up spending Sunday cleaning it up together and now it actually looks intentional instead of neglected. Has anyone else had a random comment from a neighbor make you rethink something you were stubborn about?

Honestly, Frank from two doors down sounds like he needs to mind his own business. Three years ago my neighbor Bob told me my front yard looked like a 'jungle' and I spent a whole weekend ripping stuff out to make him happy. Next thing I know, the bees and butterflies I used to see every morning just vanished from that side of the house. Now my yard looks like everyone else's boring grass patch and I regret it every time I see a monarch fly past. Maybe your yard was messy but at least it was alive, you know?

And yeah it's wild how doing the "right" thing for the neighbors can totally backfire like that. I mean, let your yard be a little wild if it's bringing the good bugs and birds around. Maybe Frank should get a hobby instead of policing other people's grass.

Maybe Frank's the one attracting the rodents by watching too close.
