That cashier at Target made me think about tipping culture

I bought a single soda at Target last Tuesday and the cashier literally said 'thank you for your service' when I paid. Not sarcastic either, dead serious. Now I'm stuck wondering if people actually thank retail workers for just existing or if I'm overthinking a random comment. Has anyone else had a weird interaction with a stranger that made you question social norms for days?

Just say "you too" and keep moving, that's what I do.

Walked into my local coffee shop last week and the barista handed me my drink and goes "you're a lifesaver" like I'd just donated a kidney instead of ordering a medium roast. I froze up so bad I just stared at her for a solid five seconds before mumbling "thanks, you too" and practically fled the building. @phoenix573 you get it, that script is foolproof for a reason. Now I'm just worried I'm gonna accidentally say "you too" at a wedding when someone says "congratulations" or something lmao.

Big mood (if you'll excuse the old person slang). I had a guy at the deli counter once thank me for being "a patient customer" after I waited three whole minutes. Like, buddy, I'm just buying ham, I didn't cure cancer here. Made me wonder if everyone's just super nice or if I've been a jerk my whole life without noticing.
