The moment I realized my chemtrail theory was backwards

I spent about 6 years convinced those white lines in the sky were some government mind control operation. Had all the YouTube videos saved, even bought a spectrometer to test water samples from my backyard in Phoenix. Then I worked a night shift at the hospital with a retired Air Force pilot who broke down how contrails actually form from temperature and humidity at 35,000 feet. He showed me weather data from that same day and the persistent trails matched high altitude moisture exactly. Made me question if I was cherry picking evidence to fit the wild story instead of looking at the boring truth. Now I wonder how many other theories I have are just me ignoring the simple explanation because it's less exciting. Anyone else ever had a moment where reality punched through your favorite theory?

My buddy Mike was deep into the whole 9/11 conspiracy stuff for years, like truther forums and everything. He had this whole map of the pentagon with red circles and arrows showing "proof" the plane never hit it. Then his cousin, who was a contractor for the NTSB, sat him down with actual flight recorder data and video frame analysis from the FAA. Mike told me it was like watching a magic trick get explained, you just see all the weird stuff you focused on was just normal investigation stuff. He said the cousin didn't even try to argue, just showed him the boring government paperwork and said "here's where you got confused." Now he jokes he's scared to look up any other theory because he might find out he's been wrong about everything for a decade.

The cousin's approach is the key here. No arguing, just data. Did Mike ever say what single piece of evidence made him stop and go, "Oh, I was wrong about that"? I've always wondered if these things crack with one big fact or a hundred little ones. Heard similar stories about people leaving QAnon, always a specific detail that just didn't fit. Bet it was something super boring too, like a timestamp mismatch or a radar blip glitch. Curious if he still lurks in those old forums just to see what they're saying now.

Fell down a flat earth rabbit hole once, then watched a sunrise over the ocean from a plane.
