Vent: Guy at the auto shop tried to tell me my check engine light was just a 'glitch'

I was at Midas on 5th Ave last Thursday dropping off my van for an oil change. The mechanic pointed at my dashboard and said, 'Nah man, those lights come on all the time for no reason, it's probably just a sensor glitch.' I told him no, I've been tracking the gas mileage dropping for 3 weeks now. He literally rolled his eyes and said, 'People overthink these things.' So I asked him to scan it anyway, and sure enough it was a failing oxygen sensor. Has anyone else had a mechanic brush off a real issue like it's nothing?

Hold up, is a failing oxygen sensor really that big of a deal? I've had cars run fine with a bad one for months before. Yeah your gas mileage takes a hit, but it's not like your engine is gonna blow up tomorrow. The mechanic was being a jerk with the eye roll, but sometimes the check engine light is a glitch or something minor. Did you even notice any other problems besides the mileage thing?

Honestly @shane_clark, did you check if your mechanic even scanned for other codes first?

Respectfully, checking the sensor was the right call even if most of those lights are nothing.
