That compass trick falls apart the second your wall isn't a clean curve though, because a bowed stud or a bad tape joint throws the whole trace off and you're back to shaving. Half the kitchens I've been in have walls that wander in three directions at once, and a set gap can't read any of that. Sometimes the slow eyeball method is slow for a reason.
