Hit my 50th flat tire of the year last Tuesday and that felt like a wake up call
I was out on the Greenway Trail near the river when tire #50 went flat. It made me realize I had been cheaping out on rim tape for months. How many flats do you all usually hit before you decide to change your setup?

Hold on, 50 flats in a year? That seems like a lot even for bad rim tape. Are you sure it wasn't the tires themselves or maybe just really bad luck with debris? Usually if I hit 3 or 4 in a month I start looking closer at everything.

Maybe it's just me but this kind of thing happens more in life than we realize. You fix one little thing but ignore the root cause, then wonder why the same problem keeps popping up over and over. Think about it, like when your car makes a weird noise and you just turn up the radio instead of checking the engine. Or when you keep losing your keys and blame bad luck but really you always toss them on a cluttered counter. Same with flats, you blame debris but the rim tape is probably the real issue, just like how we miss the obvious patterns right in front of us.

Nah, I gotta disagree with you there. 50 flats in a year is insane even if you're riding through a glass factory every day. I've been riding for over a decade and I've never hit more than maybe 6 or 7 in a year total, and that includes some real sketchy back roads. If someone's getting flats that often, it's almost always a rim tape issue or a spoke poking through, not just bad luck. I'd bet money they've got a tiny burr on the rim or the tape shifted and they never caught it. Check the inside of the rim where the bead seats, that's where the real trouble hides.
