Tried wiping my shower mirror with a dryer sheet instead of glass cleaner

I read somewhere that dryer sheets cut through soap scum and fog, so I grabbed a used one out of the laundry bin and gave my bathroom mirror a rub last Thursday. Honestly, it left a weird greasy film at first so I thought it was a bust, but then I hit it with a dry microfiber cloth and the thing stayed fog free for like four days straight. My usual Windex routine never lasts past a single shower. So now I'm torn between sticking with this dryer sheet method for the anti fog payoff or going back to glass cleaner because the initial smeary step is annoying. Does the film eventually build up and ruin the mirror over time? Anyone else get better results from a specific brand of sheet or a different wipe down trick?

Hold up, let me push back on this a little. Dryer sheets are basically fabric softener soaked in wax and synthetic fragrance (which clings to the glass), and that waxy residue is what’s trapping the fog temporarily. Problem is, that film attracts dust and lint way faster than clean glass does, so after a few days your mirror gets this dull, hazy look that regular elbow grease can't fix without a dedicated glass stripper. Plus, the heat from a hot shower can actually bake that layer on over time, causing permanent discoloration or streaking that no amount of microfiber buffing will touch. I had a buddy who tried this trick for a month and ended up having to replace his bathroom mirror because the coating had stained it yellow near the edges. Stay with Windex or just do the shaving cream trick (which is basically the same idea but without the soap scum additives), because the long term cost of ruining a mirror isn't worth four days of fog free viewing.

Jump in with the shaving cream trick, it works a lot better. I tried the dryer sheet thing myself about two years ago and got the same greasy haze Troy is talking about. After a few weeks the mirror looked grimy even when it was dry, and I had to scrub it with a mix of vinegar and dish soap to cut through the buildup. Never got any yellow staining though, that sounds like a bad combination of hard water and cheap sheets. The shaving cream trick is just as easy and it doesn't leave that waxy residue behind. I spread a nickel sized dab on a dry mirror, rub it in with a dry cloth like I'm waxing a car, then buff it off after a minute. It lasts a good week and a half for me with zero smearing or dust problems.
