My cousin told me to put dish soap in the gas tank to clean it out
He swore it would fix my engine knocking and I actually tried it last summer on my 2002 Civic, which then died on the highway 3 miles later. Anyone else have a relative give them car advice that sounded insane but they went along with it anyway?

Same thing happened to my neighbor's F150. Turned out the timing chain jumped a tooth on the passenger side bank. If it died suddenly with a clatter, definitely check the timing components before you pull the whole engine. Those nylon timing gears can shred and leave plastic chunks in the oil pan. Even if it just sputtered and quit, pull the valve covers first to see if any pushrods bent. I'd drain the oil too and look for glitter, that metal flake tells you everything about the bottom end.
