Dropped $2,500 on a new Trane AC unit last summer and the energy savings are real but my neighbor says I should have just fixed the old one for $200

The old unit was guzzling power and the repair guy quoted me $1,200 for a new compressor anyway, so did I waste my money or does spending big on efficiency actually pay off long term for Amarillo summers?

My old Trane unit from 2008 finally gave out last June during a 105 degree stretch. Cost me $2,800 for a new one installed. My neighbor Rick kept telling me to just patch it up for $350 but the thing was already 16 years old. @angelarivera you get it with those summers, it's brutal out here. First month my bill dropped by $85 so I figure in about 3 years I'll break even just on power savings alone. Plus no more calling the repair guy every summer for some new leak or dead capacitor. Your mileage may vary but going cheap on AC in Amarillo usually means you'll be sweating it out twice as much later.

Buddy of mine in Lubbock kept patching his 2005 unit for three years. Finally died on the Fourth of July with family over. Cost him twice what you paid cause it was an emergency call.
