Had a plumber tell me to check my pressure regulator before calling him again

My house in Canyon had water hammer so bad it shook the pipes every time I ran the washing machine. Called a plumber out and he charged me $85 just to look at it. He said the pressure was over 100 psi and I could fix it myself with a $30 regulator from Lowes. After I swapped it out the hammer stopped completely. Made me wonder how many other small fixes I could do before calling pros. Anyone else had a simple fix they found after paying for a service call?

My neighbor actually did the same thing with his water heater last year. Paid a plumber $120 to tell him the pressure regulator was shot and he could do it himself. I get where you're coming from but I think there's a flip side to this. Sometimes you really don't know what's wrong and paying that diagnostic fee saves you from making a mess or buying the wrong part. I've seen people try to fix a leaky faucet themselves and end up flooding their kitchen because they didn't realize it was a cracked pipe behind the wall. So yeah, some stuff is easy but other times it's worth paying the pro to at least tell you what's what.

Fair point, but $120 is steep for just a look-see.
