I visited an AI art gallery in Brooklyn and nobody could tell which pieces were human-made
Went to this pop-up exhibit in Williamsburg last weekend that showed 20 paintings side by side. 10 were done by people, 10 by Midjourney and DALL-E. They had a blind voting thing at the end. Out of like 50 people there, only 3 got more than half right. I got 7 out of 10 correct but only because I noticed one AI piece had a strange shadow on a face that didn't match the light source. But the other 9 I was just guessing. Has anyone else done a test like this? How do you even spot AI art in a gallery setting anymore?

...3 out of 50 got it right, that's wild.

The shadow thing is the only real tell left honestly. Hands and eyes used to be easy but now they're basically flawless unless you pixel peep. I tried that online test someone posted last month and got 6 out of 10 just by guessing. The scary part is the AI pieces that fooled me had actual emotion in the composition. Like one portrait felt melancholic and I assumed a person painted it. Turned out to be Midjourney 5.2. We're way past the point of looking for weird teeth or extra fingers. Now it's really just trusting your gut about lighting physics and even that's fading fast.

Do you think most people are just bad at seeing the small details or is AI really that close now? I used to be one of those people who said "oh I can always tell when it's AI, look at the hands or the eyes." But after doing a blind test online where I got like 5 out of 10 right I stopped being so sure. The gallery setup you describe is a real wake up call. If only 3 out of 50 people could beat chance then it means the rest of us are basically guessing. I guess I have to admit that my eye for this stuff isn't as sharp as I thought. The shadow thing you noticed is a good tip but I bet as these models get better even that will disappear.
