My neighbor the accountant showed me something scary about AI last Tuesday
I was out getting the mail and ran into my neighbor Dave. He's been a tax accountant for like 20 years. He told me his firm just bought an AI tool that can prep a basic return in under 2 minutes. He said it used to take him 45 minutes for the same thing. I asked if he was worried and he laughed, said his boss already told them no new hires this year. That hit me because Dave has always been super steady and relaxed about his job. Now he's talking about getting certified in something else on the side. Has anyone else had a friend in a white collar job suddenly get nervous about their future with AI around?

The 45 minutes to 2 minutes thing really got me. That's not just faster, that's basically wiping out the need for junior accountants entirely. Dave's boss cutting new hires on day one is the scary part. A lot of companies are probably gonna do the same, quietly.
