One comment about my old furnace filter changed how I buy them now
Last fall in Edmonton, a HVAC tech told me I was wasting money on cheap fiberglass filters. He showed me how my furnace was working twice as hard with a $5 filter compared to a $15 pleated one. Now I only buy MERV 8 filters from Home Hardware and swap them every 3 months like clockwork. Anyone else get told they were doing something basic all wrong?

Been running basic fiberglass filters for years with zero issues, never saw a reason to spend more.

Fiberglass is better than nothing but @shane_park92 you're basically just stopping the big dust bunnies... everything else just sails right through your furnace. I ran those cheap ones for a year then swapped to a MERV 8 and my AC coils stayed clean for the first time ever. The utility bill dropped a little too. Your blower motor probably hates you.

Whoa, nobody's factoring in reduced airflow can shorten your AC compressor's life too!
