A friend said my anime takes were too surface level and it stung
I posted a review saying a show was 'just okay' and my buddy pointed out I only talked about animation and plot holes. He said I never mention themes, character arcs, or what the director was trying to say (you know, the actual meat of it). So for the last three months, I've been forcing myself to write at least two paragraphs on the 'why' behind a show, not just the 'what'. It's harder but my posts feel less empty now. Do you think deeper analysis makes discussions better, or does it sometimes just overcomplicate things that are meant to be fun?

Honestly, good on you for actually putting in the work. A lot of people would just get defensive. You hit on the real issue, which is that shallow talk just ends the conversation. If all you say is "animation good, plot bad," there's nowhere to go. But when you dig into the why, even if you're just starting out, it gives someone something to actually agree or disagree with. It turns a statement into a discussion. It doesn't have to be a college paper, just... having a real thought. That's what makes talking about this stuff fun, instead of just listing facts.

Totally. I started pointing out specific shots in a show's lighting that made me feel a certain way, and suddenly we were having a real back and forth.

Yeah exactly, it's like you gotta give people a hook to grab onto. What's a take you've had recently that actually made someone stop and think?
