Changed how I watch subbed shows" sounds like he told you to just stare at the subtitles the whole time like a normal person. Was this guy selling a DVD of his own fan translation or did he just yell at you for missing the one scene where the subs don't match the dub. Either way, it's always the guys at anime cons who think they've unlocked the secret to enjoying media correctly.

Three anime cons in a row taught me that reading subs actually helps me catch jokes I'd miss in the dub.
