I finally visited the Grand Canyon last month and honestly it felt overrated
Drove 8 hours from Phoenix to see it for the first time. Everyone talks about how amazing it is but I spent most of the day looking at a big hole in the ground. The crowds were ridiculous and the parking lot was a mess. Has anyone else been let down by a famous natural landmark?

I gotta say I used to be the exact opposite about the Grand Canyon but after hearing your experience it kinda changed my mind. I remember when my uncle dragged our family there years ago and I thought it was the coolest thing ever because I was young and just wanted to see a really big hole. Looking back now I totally get what you mean though - the crowds and the parking situation alone can kill the whole vibe. The way you put it about "spending most of the day looking at a big hole in the ground" really nailed it for me because that's basically what it is when you strip away all the hype. I still think it's impressive but your mileage may vary depending on when you go and what you expect from it.

That bit about "looking at a really big hole" is basically how I describe my last trip to the Grand Canyon too. I stood there for a good ten minutes trying to feel something profound, but all I could think about was finding a bathroom before the bus left. Guess that's just my brain being a cheap motel on the scenic route of life.

At least your cheap motel brain came with a bathroom nearby lol.
