Rant: recipe books vs. YouTube tutorials for learning to cook

I learned to cook from my mom's handwritten recipe cards, but my daughter just pulls up a 10-minute video every time. Which method actually teaches you better - following written steps or watching someone do it in real time?

It's just like everything else now, we got the instructions but videos show you the actual tricks and feel of doing it right. Real time demos are taking over because text can't capture all the tiny details that make or break something.

Watch both then cook from memory. That's how you actually learn.

My mom had this old Betty Crocker cookbook from 1982 that I swore by for years. But last month I tried making her lasagna from the book and it came out a total brick, so I looked up a video where this Italian grandma just walked through it. She showed me how the sauce should actually look when it's ready and I realized watching someone's hands and hearing their little tips was way more useful than "bake until golden" ever was.
