Vent: my entire payroll calculation for Q4 was off by $2,300 because I trusted a spreadsheet macro

I was sitting at my desk in Grand Rapids last Friday running the final numbers and noticed the totals didn't match up with the hourly logs. Turns out the macro had been rounding every entry down a cent for three months, and now I have to explain to my boss why we need to issue corrections to 14 people.

Relying on a macro without double checking the formulas is asking for trouble. Spreadsheets are great but you gotta verify the math yourself sometimes.

Wait, are you saying there are people who actually run macros they don't fully understand? I thought everyone at least glanced at the code before hitting execute. That is asking for some serious trouble down the line.

Yeah but glancing at the code isn't really the same as actually checking the formulas.
