Watched a guy at a shop in Phoenix use a $40 harbor freight spray gun on a BMW 7-series last Tuesday and the clear coat orange peeled so bad we could see it from 20 feet.
He said he'd been doing it that way for years and that the paint was the expensive part, not the gun - has anyone else seen a cheap gun actually ruin a high-dollar job like that?

Yeah that orange peel had to be brutal. I've seen a cheap gun lay down clear like a textured ceiling before.

Man, that hurts to even think about. Harbor Freight spray guns and a 7-series? That's like putting dollar store tires on a Ferrari. I've seen guys argue that it's all in the prep and the paint itself, but you can't fix a gun that's basically a firehose for clear coat. That orange peel was probably thick enough to slice and serve for breakfast. Bet the clear coat looked like a golf ball by the time he was done.

Bet you could wet sand most of that orange peel out if the clear was laid thick enough, saved a few guns that way.
