I bought this high-end capacitor tester off Amazon thinking it would save me time on compressor calls, but the readings were all over the place and I ended up swapping a good part. Lost an hour on a service call in Toledo because I trusted it instead of my old multimeter. Anyone else had a tool that looked good but just didn't deliver?

Went to a car wash in Detroit that's fully automated now, no humans in sight

I was driving through Detroit last weekend and stopped at this car wash that used to have like 4 guys drying and wiping everything down. Now it's all robots and sensors, not a single person working there. The whole thing took maybe 3 minutes and cost $12, but I kept thinking about those guys who lost their gig. I get that it's faster and probably cheaper for the owner, but it's wild how fast jobs just disappear without anyone talking about it. My buddy works at a warehouse and says they're testing bots for packing orders now, same kind of thing. Has anyone else seen a place near them just swap all the workers for machines overnight?

I used to laugh at people who weighed their ingredients... now I'm the one with a scale on the counter

For years I thought it was nonsense. Just extra dishes and wasted time. I mean I've been cooking professionally for 12 years, I can eyeball a tablespoon of salt no problem. Then my pastry chef quit last March and I had to cover the dessert station for 3 weeks. First batch of brioche came out like a brick. Second batch was too wet. Third try I finally grabbed the scale and followed the recipe exactly. Night and day difference. The crumb was perfect, the rise was consistent. Now I weigh almost everything for pastry and even some savory stuff like doughs and batters. Still refuse to weigh my damn garlic cloves though. That's where I draw the line. Anyone else come around to weighing things after swearing it off for years?

Hot take: spending $8 on a spice blend saved my budget chili

I burned $35 on random whole spices that sat in my cabinet for months, then bought one $8 packet of chili seasoning at the grocery store. It made my cheapest batch of beans and ground turkey actually taste good. Has anyone else found a single cheap shortcut that beats buying everything separate?

Honestly I used to be one of those people who thought cabbage was just for coleslaw and St. Patrick's Day. Last month I bought a whole head for $3 at Aldi in Columbus and was about to toss it when I noticed it was still totally fine after 3 weeks in the fridge. I ended up roasting half of it with olive oil and salt at 400 degrees for 25 minutes and it caramelized so sweet I ate it like popcorn. Then I shredded the other half and tossed it into a stir fry with soy sauce and a beaten egg. The crunch lasted all week in my lunch bag and I didn't waste a single leaf. Has anyone else found a cheap veg that just keeps going way past what you'd expect?

I was scrolling through my flight history (just out of boredom, really) and realized I've taken 50 flights this year. That number hit me hard because it's way more than I ever thought I'd do, especially on a budget. Learned a killer brisket trick from a random guy at a comp in Kansas City

I was at the American Royal last fall and this old-timer told me to wrap my brisket in peach paper instead of foil when the stall hits. Did it on my next cook and the bark came out way better. Anyone else tried that or stick with butcher paper?

Cop walked up while I was tossing bread crumbs and handed me a ticket on the spot. Apparently there's a city ordinance from 1924 that bans feeding any wild birds on public property. Has anyone else gotten nailed by a weird local law you never heard of?

Bought a supposed Civil War relic online and it cost me $400 in fake memorabilia

I got into collecting Civil War items a few years back, mostly buttons and bullets. Last spring I saw a listing for a Confederate belt buckle from a guy in Georgia, said it was dug up on a private battlefield. Paid $400 for it because the pictures looked good and he had a story about his granddad finding it. When it arrived, the metal was too shiny and the markings were off. I took it to a local museum curator who confirmed it's a modern reproduction, probably made in India. The seller disappeared and the listing was gone within a week. Has anyone else been burned by these online relic dealers who claim items are authentic?
