My pharmacy's new robot dispenser mixed up two prescriptions
Last Tuesday I went to pick up my blood pressure meds at the CVS on 5th Street in Austin. The new automated dispenser handed me someone else's inhaler and my prescription was in the bin behind the counter. The tech said the robot flagged a barcode mismatch but the system still let it through. It took 40 minutes to sort out and they had to manually override everything. I get that machines speed things up, but that mistake never happened with the human pharmacist in 15 years. Has anyone else had a close call with automation at a pharmacy or hospital?
Ask the pharmacy for a paper log of every override they do on the robot. I had something similar happen at a Walgreens in Round Rock and the manager told me they have to keep those records for state audits. If you get that and file a complaint with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, they take this stuff pretty seriously. Also, double check every pill bottle before you leave the counter, even the ones that look identical. I caught a wrong dosage that way once, the label said 10mg but the pills were 20mg. It's a pain, but that 40 minutes you lost is nothing compared to the alternative.
