Talking to an SDR changed my mind about cold email scripts

Had a call with a guy who books meetings for a data platform. He said scripts are for people who don't trust their own voice. Told me he reads the prospect's LinkedIn for 2 minutes then just types what he'd actually say. Hit rate went up 40% after he ditched templates. Made me wonder if our whole ops playbook is backwards. Anyone else think we over-engineer this stuff?

Yeah, bullet points work way better than full scripts.

Actually that guy's onto something but I'd push back a little on the 40% number. Hard to believe he tracked that precisely unless he was A/B testing scripts vs no scripts with a big sample size. Most people just guess at their improvement rates based on a good month. From what I've seen, a loose structure with your own words works better than full scripts or total winging it. Like a bullet point list of talking points feels more natural than a typed out paragraph. One thing people miss is that even informal messages need a clear ask early, or the prospect just skips to the next email.

Wait have you seen those Gong studies on email length and reply rates?
