Warning: I was a total idiot about the John Muir Trail for years until I saw a guy with a 15 pound pack.

But is a lighter pack really that big of a deal?

Read a study once where they tracked hikers with different pack weights. Turns out, a few pounds less can really cut down on leg fatigue over a long day. It's not just about comfort, it's about being able to go farther without getting as worn out. For me, that means I enjoy the hike more and feel better at camp. So yeah, in my experience, it makes a bigger difference than you'd guess.

Have you ever had to bail on a planned side trail because you were just too beat? That extra weight adds up with every single step, and it steals your energy for exploring. For me, that's where the real cost of a heavy pack shows up.

Remember that study @leewalker mentioned, but for your feet?
