Bought a $90 'artisan' sourdough starter kit online last year.

Came with a jar, fancy flour, and instructions. Followed it for weeks. Never got a single bubble. Total waste. Ended up just asking my aunt for a scoop of hers. Anyone else get burned by a fancy starter kit?

My buddy runs a bakery and he told me most of those kits sit in warehouses for months. The yeast is probably dead before it even ships. They bank on people not knowing you can literally start one with just flour and water from your own kitchen. The fancy packaging is the real product.

Ugh, that explains everything. I bought a fancy kit last year and my starter was a total brick. I followed the instructions perfectly and got nothing. I felt so dumb, like I failed at flour and water. Now I'm just picturing my sad little yeast packet rotting in some hot storage unit for half a year.

Wait, MONTHS? That's insane. No wonder my last kit barely bubbled at all. I just figured I messed up the water temp, but dead yeast from the start makes way more sense.
