I thought my neighbor was nuts for talking to his tomato plants, then I watched him do it for 10 minutes
I always figured the whole "talk to your plants" thing was hippie nonsense, but my neighbor Dale in Boise has been doing it since 2016 and his tomatoes are twice the size of mine. Last Saturday I stood on my side of the fence and listened while he told each plant what he was doing before he did it, like "okay, I'm watering the roots now, not the leaves." He told me he does it because it forces him to slow down and look at each plant one at a time, and I noticed he caught a hornworm I would have walked right past. I always thought this kind of gardening advice belonged in the trash, but now I want to know if anyone else here has tried it or if Dale is just a lucky man with good soil.
My buddy Ray up in Twin Falls started doing the same thing three summers ago, mostly as a joke to mess with his wife. He talks to his peppers now, tells them good morning and everything, and he swears the big thing is it makes him stop and actually look at the leaves instead of just hosing everything down and walking off. He found spider mites early that year and caught them before they spread to the whole row. Dale might not be lucky at all, he might just be paying attention. Slowing down and looking at one plant at a time sounds like the real trick there, not the talking part.
