That old barber told me to skip the thinning shears entirely

Guy with 40 years experience said I'd never learn proper texture work if I relied on thinning shears. Took his advice for 6 months. My fades look way better now. Anyone else ditch thinning shears for texturizing with clippers?

Nah man I gotta disagree - thinning shears are a legit tool if you know how to use em right. Not every texture job needs to be done with clippers.

Jumping off what Tessa said - thinning shears have their place but most people grab them way too early in a haircut and end up taking out all the weight in weird spots. Seen way too many hack jobs where someone just starts snipping away with thinners without thinking about the overall shape first. A good shear cut should still flow nicely even if you never touch the thinning part. Honestly, if you're relying on thinners to fix a bad haircut, you're probably better off starting over with clippers instead of trying to patch things up. A proper textured cut comes from the clipper work, not from a pair of shears trying to undo the damage after. Just my take after watching people struggle with this for years.
