Ran into a pitmaster at a gas station in Memphis who gave me a weird tip

I was filling up my truck before a cook, and this older guy in a sauce-stained shirt saw my smoker in the bed and asked if I was competing. He told me, 'Kid, if your bark ain't setting, spritz with apple juice and a splash of pickle brine, not just water.' I've been doing it for two months now, but has anyone else tried something that odd that actually worked?
