Had to pick between a $200 air purifier and a $30 box fan with a filter taped to it
My apartment in Phoenix has no AC and wildfire smoke rolled in last August, so I needed clean air fast. I went with the box fan hack since I was broke, and it actually dropped the particle count by half on my cheap monitor. Has anyone else tested this against the real deal or am I just breathing in hope?

Box fan filters work decent for particles but miss a lot of the fine stuff and VOCs that real purifiers catch. A HEPA filter with activated carbon will pull out way more of the smoke smell and tiny irritants that make your lungs feel rough. If you can swing the upgrade later, your breathing will thank you.

Wait, your box fan hack actually cut the particle count in half? That's wild. Honestly I rigged up the same setup during the 2020 California fires and my little monitor barely budged, maybe like 15 percent drop max. Taped a MERV 13 filter to a 20 inch Lasko and still woke up with a scratchy throat and that smoky taste in my mouth. So hearing yours halved the particles makes me wonder if your monitor is just as cheap as mine or if I messed up the tape job real bad.
