Finally hit 5000 hours on my anvil and my shoulder is screaming
I keep a log of every project and job I do for tracking material costs and time, and last month I crossed 5000 hours of hammer time on the same anvil. Never really thought about the total until my apprentice asked how many swings I thought I'd taken and I did the rough math. That's like 10 years of weekends and late nights for me, all on a 150 pound Fisher that my grandad passed down. Anybody else ever count up their hours and get surprised by the number?

Funny how nobody mentions the anvil itself taking a beating too. I checked mine after about 3000 hours and the face had actually started to dish a bit in the center from all that hammering. Had to have it resurfaced. Your granddad's Fisher is probably tougher than mine though, those old ones were forged different.

3000 hours is actually pretty quick for a face to dish. What type of hammer head weight were you mostly using during that time? I've heard the 2 pounders are way harder on an anvil face than the heavier ones since people tend to swing them faster and with more snap.

Did you check if the dishing was worse under your 2 pound hits vs heavier ones?
