Just realized my forge welding got way better after one comment

A guy at the guild told me to stop cranking the heat and actually watch the flux crawl. I dropped my temp by about 50 degrees and my last three welds held solid. Anyone else had to unlearn something basic like that?

Honestly that's exactly what I'm talking about. Too many people think maxing out the temp is the answer but all you get is burnt scale and frustration. @the_terry nailed it when he said backing off is where the real learning happens. I spent a solid year chasing higher temps before some crusty old timer told me to watch the metal not the gauge. Dropped my heat and suddenly my welds started behaving like they were supposed to. It's humbling to realize you've been overcomplicating something that simple this whole time.

My forge runs at 2300 and my welds come out fine every time.

Man that's exactly the kind of thing that took me way too long to figure out. I was running my forge way too hot for years because I thought more heat meant better welds, but it just made everything crumble and scale up bad. Dropped my temp by like 75 degrees and suddenly my damascus billets started sticking together instead of falling apart on me. Funny how the biggest improvements come from backing off and paying attention to the little details the old timers keep yelling about.
