The bonus hole at my local muni changed everything in 4 rounds
I played at Eagle Ridge in Portland where they added a 175-yard par 3 with a double green for tiebreakers. After three rounds of settling bets there I noticed my short iron accuracy improved way more than any range session ever did. Has anyone else found their normal game getting better from practicing on those bonus holes?
Drove past Eagle Ridge last month and saw they had some work done on the back nine. That short iron accuracy makes sense because you get real pressure practice instead of just hitting balls without any stakes. Rick Shiels did a video on pressure putting drills a while back and talked about how match play scenarios train your brain better than range work. Sounds like that bonus hole gives you the same kind of benefit, just with a different club.
Honestly that Rick Shiels point is spot on. I actually read an article in Golf Monthly last month about how amateur players who do short game pressure drills see way faster improvement than guys who just pound drivers. It's like your brain literally rewires itself when you know you have to chip to a hole that costs you a beer or something similar. That bonus hole at your course sounds like it would do the same thing. Ngl I might try setting something like that up at my local muni to force myself to practice those 80 yard shots with real consequences.
