Had a talk with my book club president that made me rethink everything
She told me I was treating our debates like a battle I had to win instead of a conversation where people share ideas. Then she pointed out that I cut off two members last week during the discussion on *The Night Watchman*. Now I'm wondering how many times I've been that person without even knowing it.

Woah, hold on a second. Is this really something to "rethink everything" over? I mean, sure, cutting people off is annoying, but it's a book club, not a court case. Half the time people just talk over each other because everyone's excited. Unless the club president is also the debate coach or something, I wouldn't sweat it too much. You were probably just passionate about the book. Sounds like she's making it into a bigger deal than it needs to be.

4 chapters deep and she's already acting like the book club parliamentarian.

Nah, I'm with the club president on this one. @logan658, you're acting like cutting people off is no big deal, but it's not just being excited - it's a pattern she pointed out. That's different. If I'm at a table getting opinions on a book and someone keeps jumping in before I finish my thought about a character's arc, I'm not gonna feel like sharing next time. She probably sees you shutting down quieter members without realizing it, which kills the whole point of a club. Passion is fine, but not when it makes other people feel like they're in a debate they didn't sign up for.
