My neighbor said 'The Great Gatsby' is just about rich people being sad

We were talking about our book club pick in my driveway last Tuesday. He said the whole point was just that money doesn't buy happiness, so why make a big deal about it? Has anyone else had someone totally miss the point of a book you loved?

My cousin said the same thing until I asked him what he thought the green light meant. That usually gets people to actually think about it.

Lol my neighbor probably stopped reading after the first party scene. I mean, I get it, I also just skimmed to the parts with the fancy cars.
