Our club finished 'Moby Dick' and I counted 42 separate whale facts in my notes

We read it over six weeks and I kept a small notebook for details. I went back through it last night and the number really hit me. Some folks in the group think all those facts build the world and make the hunt feel real. Others say it just bogs down the story and Melville should have cut half of them. Did your book club run into this with a detail-heavy classic? How did you talk about it without getting stuck?

Honestly, I wonder if all those whale facts are the point. Maybe the endless details are meant to make you feel as lost and overwhelmed in that world as the crew feels on the sea. It's not just about building a setting, it's about the mood. Our group argued about that for ages.

Okay but sometimes a whale fact is just a whale fact. Feels like people are looking for a hidden meaning in every single page. Maybe the guy just did a ton of research and wanted to use it.

Or maybe the author just really, really liked whales.
