That book club in Portland taught me a lesson about spoilers in public spaces
Last month I went to a reading at Powell's and the crowd was buzzing about the new thriller everyone's reading. Some guy in the back row shouted out the twist ending to his friend before the author even started. Half the room heard it. The author looked up and said, "well, there goes that." I could see three people put their books down and walk out. Ever since then I won't discuss any book outside my own living room unless it's been out for at least six months. Am I being too harsh or has anyone else had a book ruined in a weird public spot like a coffee shop or a bus stop?

Whoa, wait. Someone actually shouted out the ending of a brand new book during an author event? That is wild. I can't even imagine the nerve it takes to do that, it's like they wanted to ruin the night for absolutely everyone. I'd be so heated if I paid money to sit there and hear the author talk, only to get the whole story spoiled by some random dude in the back.

Is it really that big of a deal? I mean, sure, it's annoying, but walking out over a spoiler seems a bit much if you already bought the book and planned to read it anyway.
