Tbh, I spent 4 hours trying to figure out why my new orchid's leaves were turning yellow before I realized the grow light was way too close.

Honestly, I had it like 6 inches away thinking more light was better, but after moving it back to 18 inches, the new growth looks totally fine now, so has anyone else messed up their light distance that bad?

It's easy to forget that grow lights put out heat, not just light. A lot of those LEDs still get warm enough to cook leaves if they're too close. I've seen people use a cheap infrared thermometer to check leaf surface temp, which is a smart move. That kind of burn can look just like a nutrient problem at first glance.

Doubt it's that big a deal for most home setups. My cheap LED panel runs cool to the touch. People overcomplicate this stuff. If your plant isn't literally wilting under the light, it's probably fine. Save the thermometer for checking your oven temp.

Oh man, that's so true. I read a forum post where someone swore by checking the back of their hand under the light to gauge the heat before moving plants closer.
