Burned a pot of beans so bad it took 3 days to get the smell out

Last Tuesday I tried to stretch a bag of dried pinto beans by slow cooking them all afternoon. Fell asleep on the couch and woke up to smoke filling my apartment in Tulsa. The bottom of the pot was a solid black crust that chipped my knife when I tried to scrape it off. Ended up throwing the pot away and eating peanut butter sandwiches for the next 3 days until payday. Anybody else ruined a cheap meal plan with a simple mistake?

Burned so many pots of beans myself I started keeping a fan right by the stove to blow the smoke alarm in the other direction. It's funny how one little slip up can wreck a whole week of careful budgeting and planning. That smell just hangs in the air and follows you around the apartment too, like a ghost reminding you that you messed up. Makes you wonder why we don't just buy the canned beans and save ourselves the headache sometimes.
