I thought canned beans were the ultimate cheap hack until I tried dried ones

I've been buying 99 cent cans of black beans for years because I figured dried beans would take forever and taste worse. Bought a $2 bag of dried beans last month out of desperation and honestly they cooked up in about an hour with way more flavor. Anyone else get proven wrong by something they snobbed off for no reason?

Nah man, I gotta hard disagree on this one. Canned beans are still the way to go for me. I don't have time to soak beans overnight and then sit around waiting for an hour while they cook. When I'm hungry I want food right then, not planning my meals a day ahead. Plus canned beans are already seasoned with salt and stuff so they taste consistent every time. Dried beans you gotta nail the cooking time and the seasoning yourself or they come out mushy or bland. I'll take the extra 99 cents to skip all that hassle.

That whole "99 cents more" thing adds up fast though when youre buying for a family or meal prepping for the week. Like @thomas_sanchez, I get the convenience argument but are we really saying 10 minutes of active effort is too much? Throw dry beans in a pot with some water and garlic powder, walk away for 45 minutes, and you've got like triple the amount for half the price. The canning liquid also has a weird metallic taste sometimes, your mileage may vary but I've noticed it.

Oh man, the metallic can taste is so real. I swear sometimes it feels like I'm eating beans and pennies for dinner. And you're totally right about the math, its like paying 99 cents extra for the privilege of someone else opening a can for you. "But I don't have time to soak beans" is such a funny excuse to me, like just dont soak em then, they still cook up fine in an hour or so. I guess some people just really hate the idea of planning their meals more than 30 seconds in advance.
