I used to avoid hotel kitchens, but Lisbon changed that

I always thought eating out was the only way to experience a place (you know, like everyone says). Then in Lisbon, my hostel had a shared kitchen and I saw people making simple meals from the market. I tried it with some veggies and bread, and it cost almost nothing. Now I always book places where I can cook a little. It saves so much cash for other fun stuff.

Oh man, that's the best travel hack ever. I started doing the same thing after my first trip to Europe. I grab some eggs, bread, and fruit from a local grocery store for breakfast, and that alone saves like fifteen bucks a day. It means I can actually afford a nice dinner out instead of eating cheap fast food every meal.

I'd probably burn the kitchen down, but good for you.

Seriously though, I've messed up way too many simple meals to trust myself with anything fancy.

That "burn the kitchen down" line reminds me of when my friend tried to make chili and used way too many dried peppers. The steam set off the smoke alarm so bad the building's fire department showed up. His apartment smelled like a campfire for a week.
