My budget cooking for model building nights is a mess

I got into building scale models to relax after work. To save cash, I tried making big batches of soup to eat during my sessions. But the soup tastes like nothing and I keep wasting ingredients. Now I'm hungry, annoyed, and over budget on my hobby money. It feels like I can't win with cheap meals lately.

Oh, I read a blog post about building soup flavor on a tight budget! The writer swore by sweating down a chopped onion until it's golden, which costs almost nothing. Then you add a tablespoon of cheap soy sauce for that savory punch. It really turns a watery broth into something you look forward to during a long model session.

Hold up, you were making soup without any bouillon or onions? That's just hot vegetable water, man. No wonder it tasted like nothing. Gotta have that base flavor or it's all just sad. I'm shocked you even tried to eat that more than once.

Two bouillon cubes in a big pot of water makes a world of difference for cheap soup. Soup doesn't have to taste like nothing just because you're on a budget. You might be skipping the cheap stuff that actually gives it flavor, like a spoonful of tomato paste or dried herbs. Once you get a base that tastes good, you can throw any leftover veggies in there without wasting them.

Seriously, I always thought budget soup had to be flavorless. Reading @alice602's advice made me rethink everything. Those bouillon cubes are MAGIC in a big pot. Tomato paste and dried herbs really do add so much depth. I tried it with leftover carrots and celery, and it was actually delicious. This approach saves money AND tastes good, which is HUGE for me.
